Manila Electric Co., the biggest retailer of electricity, is confident the regulatory quandary at the Energy Regulatory Commission will be resolved this month, cautioning that the impasse may affect the country’s economic growth trajectory.

Meralco also warned that if the leadership vacuum was left unresolved, the power sector might find it hard to ensure adequate supply in the future.

Meralco president Oscar Reyes said without a fully functioning commission, “it may put at risk the capability of the industry to assure not only supply to customers but security of supply moving forward.”

“The power industry is a very heavily regulated industry. Its operations and its service to customers are largely affected by the ability of its regulator, ERC, to function effectively,” Reyes said.

The Office of the Ombudsman earlier ordered a one-year suspension of all four commissioners of the ERC.
