THE National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has addressed the increasing load growth in South Luzon with the energization of the Calamba 230-kiloVolt (kV) substation and associated transmission lines.

The P1.069-billion substation is strategically located near industrial parks to accommodate demand in Laguna, Batangas and nearby provinces. The NGCP said this project will benefit mostly industrial customers, particularly factories, manufacturing plants and other big businesses in the eco-zones and industrial parks.

According to the latest count of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), there are 10 manufacturing eco-zones in Batangas and 14 in Laguna. These areas are seen to greatly benefit from improved transmission services and improved efficiency in production of these industries and businesses.

“With many industrial and residential developments south of Metro Manila, NGCP’s new Calamba 230-kV Substation is a critical facility for South Luzon. The substation and its associated transmission lines will also serve as another highway to prevent overloading and other reliability issues,” the NGCP said last Thursday.

The project has three components: the Calamba 230kV Substation; the Calamba-Bay 230kV Transmission Line 2; and, the Calamba-Binan 230kV Transmission Line 2. The NGCP said this project is meant to address continuing load growth or the growing demand for power in the area.

NGCP is a Filipino-led, privately owned company in charge of operating, maintaining and developing the country’s power grid. It is led by majority shareholders and Vice Chairman of the Board Henry Sy Jr. and Co-Vice Chairman Robert Coyiuto Jr. It is the sole operating asset of Synergy Grid and Development Philippines Inc.
