The government has pledged to monitor the latest power adjustment implemented by Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) to ensure it is not excessive or unreasonable.

Presidential Communications Operations Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. affirmed that the Department of Energy (DOE) would protect the interest of consumers in light of the higher power rates.

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), an independent regulatory body that balances the interests of consumers and utility firms, has the main jurisdiction over determining any power rate adjustments, Coloma said.

“The situation is being closely monitored,” Coloma said in Filipino over government radio. “The government will protect the welfare of the people and will not allow any abuse by anyone or excessive or unreasonable increase.”

Meralco earlier announced it will impose an increase of 31 centavos per kilowatt-hour starting this month. The upward adjustment was reportedly a result of higher generation charges, higher universal charge, lifeline subsidy and taxes. (Genalyn D. Kabiling)
