The Energy Department issued the notice to proceed to Excelerate Energy L.P., an LNG company based in The Woodlands, Texas, for its liquefied natural gas project in the country.

Energy Undersecretary Leonido Pulido said Excelerate planned to put up a floating storage regasification unit to serve the needs of imported LNG users.

“Yes, their (Excelerate) NTP has been signed by Secretary (Alfonso Cusi),” Pulido said.Excelerate is part of a privately-held US energy group which is the pioneer and market leader in innovative floating LNG solutions. It offers a full range of floating regasification services from FSRU to infrastructure development to LNG supply.

Excelerate said floating regasification offered a more cost effective solution than traditional land-based facilities in most cases.

FSRU can be implemented in one to three years compared to four to six years for land-based terminal. Excelerate said an offshore regassification facility also required less land use, thus minimizing its impact to the environment.
