THE Energy Development Corp. (EDC) leads seven companies whose renewable energy (RE) projects nine with a total capacity of over 800 megawatts (MW) received approval from the Department of Energy (DOE) to conduct system impact studies (SIS).

Two of the RE projects are by the EDC: the 100MW Burgos 4 wind power project located in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, and the 100MW Burgos 3 wind power project in Burgos and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte. The DOE approved EDC’s application for the conduct of SIS last May 30.

The 168.95MW Calatrava solar power project by Aboitiz Solar Power Inc. in Negros Occidental was also approved by the agency last May 27.

The 20MW Bugallon solar power project of PetroGreen Energy Corp. can also proceed with the SIS.

In addition, the 288MW SolarAce3 power project of SolarAce3 Energy Corp. in Cagayan was also approved.

The two Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects of SN Aboitiz Power-Benguet Inc. and SN Aboitiz Power-Magat Inc., 40MW and 4MW, respectively, also received the green light of the DOE.

The other RE projects are the 5MW biogas power of Trustpower Corp. in Pampanga and the 200MW San Isidro wind power project of Lihangin Wind Energy Corp. in Northern Samar.

All were approved for the conduct of SIS last month. These bring to 51 the total number of power projects that received the go ahead of the DOE for the conduct of SIS since the start of the year.

The latest list was uploaded on the DOE website last week.

These projects have been issued with certificates of endorsement to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines for clearance to undertake SIS.

According to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), SIS is an assessment conducted by the transmission network provider or system operator in addition to a “grid impact study,” or GIS, it prepared in accordance with the Philippine Grid Code. This study is needed to determine the adequacy of the grid and its capability to accommodate a request for power delivery service; and the costs, if any, that may be incurred in order to provide power delivery service to a transmission customer.

The GIS is a set of technical studies, which are used to assess the possible effects of a proposed expansion, reinforcement, or modification of the grid or a user development and to evaluate significant incidents.
