Two major liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals are on track to be completed in Batangas province by 2025, according to data from the Department of Energy (DOE).

Shell Energy Philippines Inc.’s floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) terminal in Tabangao, Batangas City is targeted to begin commercial operations by September 2025. The terminal boasts a capacity of 3 million metric tons per annum and is expected to supply LNG to the 1,100-megawatt Batangas Clean Energy power plant and other third parties.

Luzon LNG Terminal Inc.’s (LLTI) FSRU terminal project, with a capacity of 4.4 MTPA, is also anticipated to start operations by December 2025. LLTI sees the EGCO Group as a potential anchor market for its LNG.

The DOE also expects Samat LNG Corp.’s small-scale LNG terminal in Bataan to be completed in two phases.

The first phase, with a capacity of 0.32 MTPA, is expected to be finished by March 2024, while the second phase is slated for completion in May 2025.

Samat plans to supply LNG to manufacturing industries and small independent power producers.

These developments follow the recent completion of FGEN LNG Corp.’s interim FSRU LNG terminal in Batangas City, with a capacity of 5.26 MPTA. FGEN LNG intends to use its LNG to power up its natural gas facilities, including the 1,000 MW Sta. Rita, 500 MW San Lorenzo, 414 MW San Gabriel, and 97 MW Avion power plants.

Linseed Field Corp.’s floating storage unit and onshore regasification project in Batangas City also commenced commercial operations in September 2023. The 3 MTPA project supplies LNG to the 1,200 MW Ilijan natural gas power plant of San Miguel Corp.

The DOE is actively promoting LNG as a “bridge fuel” to help secure the country’s energy needs while transitioning to clean energy sources.
