Meralco PowerGen Corp., the generation unit of Manila Electric Co., is set to finalize an operations and maintenance agreement with ESB International of Ireland for the 1,200-megawatt Atimonan coal-fired power plant.

“They are into new tech. The agreement with them is we are going to finalize an agreement for them to operate Atimonan once we get all of these approvals,

with an understanding that it is a 10-year engagement so that we can, after 10 years, run the plant ourselves,” Meralco PowerGen president and chief executive officer Rogelio Singson said.

Singson said the company had expertise in a wide range of energy business, which Meralco chairman Manuel Pangilinan appreciated.

“They are into a wide range, e-vehicles, batteries, smart grid. We have also started asking Meralco to start to them for electric vehicles,” he said.
