Conglomerate San Miguel Corp. expressed confidence in the viability of battery energy storage systems to help ensure the stability and reliability of the power grid.
“Nobody wants to believe that it will work. We believe on it, so we gambled. I hope we will get good with it,” SMC president Ramon Ang told reporters last week.
BESS allows power generators and utilities to be stored for later use.
SMC subsidiary SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. disclosed to the Philippine Dealing & Exchange Corp. in August that it was developing BESS projects around the country with a total capacity of 1,000 megawatt-hours for completion until next year.
The company targets to complete 470-MWh projects in 2020 until the first quarter of 2021. The remaining 530-MWh projects will be completed by the second to fourth quarter next year.
“We see an opportunity to contract more than 2,200 MW [megawatts] in capacity across the Philippines, representing uncontracted ASPA (ancillary service procurement agreement) requirements and non-firm ASPA contracts,” SMC Global Power said in a presentation.
