Meralco consumers have been pleading with the government to do something with the high power charges. More like the abuses and regulatory anomalies. We have been asking for the correction in rate setting methodology that has been enabling Meralco to make an unconscionable 25% per year in return on equity and eliminating the right of Meralco to negotiate power generation rates with their sister companies. We have been asking for the prohibition of systems loss tricks of averaging and the release of multi billion refunds to consumers.
On top of these, electricity rates are increasing due to increased charges under TRAIN on fuel and the depreciation of the peso exchange rate.
While we are waiting for government action, we Meralco (and Cebu and Davao) consumers actually have the power to do something about it now. Let us all reduce our power consumption by 25%! It will be our ultimate revenge and we can do it easily without spending anything on power consumption reduction devices and solar panels.
1. Let us reduce our use of airconditioners. If you have two, use only one. That’s a 50% reduction right there. Ask your children to sleep in your room and it’s a great time to revisit the good old days when you were so close and bonded!
If you only have one, use it only four hours a night and the rest just use electric fans.
When in use set them at 25 deg C. it is comfortable enough. If your aircon is installed in the afternoon sun side of your house, cover it from direct sunlight. They will use 10 to 15% less electricity when turned on.
2. If you are using electric stoves, cook at the same time and avoid heating or cooking food at random.
3. Similarly, iron your clothes in batches, not one by one by kuya and ate and junior. Ask them to put out at night the clothes they want ironed instead of one by one in the morning.
4. Alternate watching your favorite teleserye with your neighbors. It is actually more enjoyable in groups. You might spend more on beers but that’s another story! Unplug your TV and computers when not in use.
5. If you use electric washing machines and dryers, use them in full loads with uniform thickness clothes. They use as much electricity washing and drying light loads. But don’t overload. Don’t put wet clothes in the dryer. Either spin them well or hang them first overnight.
6. In the rainy season that can last until November, Reduce running your electric water pump booster by starting a rainwater catchment method in your house. It is simple. Just put empty drums in your downspouts and save the rainwater. Your saved rainwater is great for watering your lawn and garden, washing your car, and even washing your dishes and cleaning the house.
If you are too busy to implement these yourself, assign these to one of your smart kids as a “science” or engineering project. Reward them a percentage of electric power saved for the month. You will like the result and would probably inspirethe super engineer in your kid.
If you do all these, you will probably save 50% not just 25% of your electric bill. This is power that is within our control now as consumers. Our ultimate revenge! Let us show Meralco and let us show the government.
