Revenues of electric cooperatives (ECs) in the country declined in the first three months of 2020, the National Electrification Administration (NEA) reported on Friday. Total gross revenue of ECs reached P49.672 billion, down 1.5 percent from P50.413 billion in the same period a year ago, based on data from the NEA’s Informational Technology and Communication Services Department. Despite this, power cooperatives’ energy sales rose by 3 percent to 5,338 gigawatt hours (GWh) from 5,162 GWh. Their average system loss stood at 10.13 percent in the period, a decrease of 0.41 percent from 10.54 percent. This is also lower than the 12-percent cap prescribed by the Energy Regulatory Commission for ECs, which can be recovered and charged to electricity consumers. The same data also showed that 95 ECs posted a system loss that is still within the mandated cap. Of the total, 51 cooperatives registered single-digit system loss.
