MANILA, Philippines — The country achieved its highest renewable energy installation last year, even exceeding the total RE capacity added from 2021 to 2023, according to the Department of Energy.
Based on DOE figures released yesterday, around 794.34 megawatts of new RE capacity reinforced the country’s supply in 2024, higher than the 230.54 MW in 2023, 328.18 MW in 2022 and 230.1 MW in 2021.
The DOE said that the net-metering program contributed about 141 MW from 2015 to 2024, resulting in record-high installations last year.
Net metering is a scheme that allows power end-users to build their own RE facilities for personal use and sell any excess electricity generated to the grid.
Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla said the “unprecedented growth” was due to the “effectiveness” of the country’s RE policies and the government’s commitment to steering the Philippines toward a “more self-reliant energy future.”
These new capacity additions are expected to strengthen the reliability and resiliency of the power grid, ensuring a more stable and secure energy supply amid the growing energy demand.
“With sustained collaboration, strategic investments, and policy support, we are confident in achieving our target of increasing the (RE) share in the power generation mix to 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040,” Lotilla said.
At present, renewables only account for at least 22 percent of the country’s energy mix.
The DOE, however, remains optimistic about the country’s energy transition push amid key policy and regulatory enhancements aimed at bolstering new installations.
Among these is the integration of all applications and permitting processes for energy projects in the EVOSS, or energy virtual one-stop shop system, which streamlines the application process.
To further take advantage of these new RE capacity additions, the DOE said it is closely monitoring critical transmission line projects to ensure their timely completion and prevent stranded power generation.
“As the Philippines continues its aggressive push for (RE), the DOE remains committed to implementing policies and initiatives that will strengthen energy security, attract investments and ensure a sustainable and resilient power sector for future generations,” it said.
