Metro Manila cities urge for the lowering of power rates

The call for the lowering of power rates is sounding louder with key cities of the National Capital Region (NCR) joining the call. Last April, Manila passed Resolution 6165 – S. 2014 in expression of the city’s strong opposition to the high electricity rates charged by power companies. The resolution was introduced by Councilor Antonio Archimedes Matias G. Capistrano of the city’s 4th district.

The cities of Caloocan and Marikina had also filed for similar resolutions expressing their opposition on the ever-increasing power rates.

Last month, Quezon City followed suit when the city council unanimously approved a city resolution versus power rate hikes billed as PR19CC-463 or A resolution expressing the strong sense of protest and opposition to the high electricity rates being charged by power companies and calling on the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to strictly exercise its regulatory powers to reduce the cost of electricity. The resolution was introduced by Councilor Karl Edgar C. Castelo of the 5th district.

The consumer group Power Off lobbied the passing of such resolutions in these big cities where big slice of electricity consumers within the Meralco franchise area are found. The group is expecting that other key cities within NCR will also pass their own resolutions.
