Meralco assures readiness for dry season: Reminds public to practice energy efficiency

READY 24/7. Meralco workers conduct maintenance operations to ensure reliable electricity service throughout the dry season, especially during the midterm elections.

MANILA, Philippines – Power distributor giant Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) assured its customers on Monday of its “readiness” to deliver stable electricity during the summer months, when power consumption is expected to peak.

In a statement, the company said it was closely working with the government and industry players to ensure a reliable power supply.

“This is to meet the higher demand we anticipate in the coming months, which coincides with the country’s midterm elections,” said Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications.

Meralco also noted that residential electricity consumption usually rises by 20 percent to 33 percent from the cooler months of January and February.

Some of the efforts Meralco has deployed so far include maintenance and upgrading activities of its distribution network and facilities.

The company also secured a supply boost to meet the expected rise in demand as well as to not rely on the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market, with its rates going up during the hotter period.

“Our generator sets are ready, and our crews will be deployed in strategic locations so that in case of isolated interruptions, we are ready to respond accordingly,” Zaldarriaga said.

Meanwhile, the Inquirer asked about Meralco’s readiness for earthquakes, following the massive tremor that shook Myanmar and Thailand.

“Through massive investments in system upgrades, modernization of our facilities, and enhanced emergency response measures, Meralco’s efforts to deliver reliable and continuous electricity service to our customers is assured even during times of calamity,” Zaldarriaga told the Inquirer.

Zaldarriaga said Meralco would continue to beef up its infrastructure to prepare for natural disasters.
