Interconnection project to start this year – NGCP

THE National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is set to begin its P51.9-billion Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP) this year.

In a statement on Thursday, the grid operator said the construction of the facility linking the Mindanao grid to the Luzon-Visayas grid was expected to last two years.

“The benefits…will come not just when the facility is energized and begins to facilitate power exchange across the three main island groups, but will begin encouraging economic activity in remote areas as soon as construction begins this year,” the NGCP said.

The project—the biggest of its kind in the country’s history—would not only bolster the country’s transmission network, but also provide employment, according to the company.

These include civil and electrical engineers, timekeepers, safety officers, nurses, carpenters, welders, masons, warehousemen, and electricians.

NGCP’s statement came a month after Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said MVIP was tagged as an energy project of national significance.

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) approved the project last September.
