The 668-megawatt (MW) supercritical coal-fired power plant of GNPower Dinginin Ltd. Co. (GNPD) tripped Wednesday morning due to faulty sensor, an official of Aboitiz Power Corp. said.
The incident led to a power interruption affecting some customers of the Manila Electric Co. in parts of Manila, Quezon City, Pasig and some portions of Bulacan, Cavite, Quezon and Laguna. Power restoration was recorded at 10:30 a.m.
AboitizPower President Emmanuel Rubio said the incident was “a minor relay concern” and was caused by a faulty sensor.
“We can go back as soon as we replace the sensor but we will take advantage of the situation to make the necessary adjustments in other areas,” said Rubio.
GNDP is an Aboitiz-controlled firm that has partnered with Ayala Corp.’s power. GNPD Unit 1 officially started commercial operations last January 26. Unit 2, which has started commissioning, is set for initial synchronization in the second quarter of 2022.
It received from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in December last year its 5-year Certificate of Compliance for the first unit.
Rubio added that the incident will also allow the power firm to resolve all issues that it has encountered since it started commercial operations.
AboitizPower has over 1,000 MW of projects under construction that are expected to operate commercially this year. These include the PV Sinag Power Cayanga project, TMI Maco Hybrid Battery Energy Storage System project.
The company targets to significantly grow its Cleanergy brand by 3,700 MW, both domestically and internationally, and bring its renewable portfolio to 4,600 MW by 2030.
