The Department of Energy wants Manila Electric Co. to explore other options in proceeding with its competitive selection process over the supply of 1,800 megawatts of electricity.

Energy Assistant Secretary Redentor Delola said Meralco asked the DOE to postpone a planned CSP in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

“They requested if they can postpone it to a later date because of the difficulty in doing the CSP process given the situation that we’re faced now,” Delola said.

He said Meralco, the country’s biggest retailer of electricity, wants to delay its CSP and start the public bidding process by October.

“What we are trying to tell them, there are mediums they can utilize to be able to proceed with the procurement. The issue that… we don’t want to happen is that deferment of the sked may delay the delivery of the power supply,” Delola said.

“So what we are trying to say is explore additional medium or other medium to proceed so we can still be able to hit the target of delivery of supply,” he said.
