The Department of Energy said Thursday it is set to submit to President Rodrigo Duterte the study of the inter-government agency on the adoption of a national position on a nuclear energy program.
“We’re scheduled to submit this proposal or national policy on Dec. 20. After Dec. 20, it’s up to the President if he will consider it,” Energy Assistant Secretary Gerardo Erguiza said in a webinar Thursday.
Duterte signed Executive Order No. 116 on July 24, providing for the creation of the Nuclear Energy Program Inter-Agency Committee chaired by DOE to conduct the study.
The committee was tasked to submit its recommendation on a national position on nuclear energy to the Office of the President.
“We have completed our discussions, presentations. Next week, we’re going to finalize the draft of the report to the president and sub-committee reports,” Erguiza said.
He said that once the recommendation was approved by the president, the Philippines would have a policy of including nuclear power in the energy mix.
“It’s not putting up nuclear power plant. It’s a first step process to go further in adopting nuclear power,” Erguiza said.
