The Department of Energy said Friday it endorsed to transmission operator National Grid Corp. of the Philippines 12 projects for system impact study in December, bringing the total for the year to 191, accounting for 41,764.64 megawatts (MW).

The DOE said bulk of the issuance last year were renewable energy projects at 41,454 MW.

“In December 2024, the DOE issued 12 SIS endorsements, which are all new applications,” it said.

The SIS determines the capacity of the power grid to accommodate additional capacities and identify necessary improvements needed such as transmission lines, transformers or substations.

Among the big projects endorsed to NGCP were the 3,400-MW offshore wind project of TotalPower Inc. in Negros Oriental; the 900-MW offshore wind project of TotalPower in Ilocos Norte; the 540-MW offshore wind project of WPD Philippines Inc. in Cavite and Batangas; the 480-MW wind project of WPD Philippines in Occidental Mindoro; and the 403-MW solar power plant of Abagat Energy Corp. in Pagbilao, Quezon.

Other endorsed projects in December included the 237.6-MW Bulacan 2 wind project of CleanTech Renewable Energy 50 Corp. in Dona Remedios, Trinidad; the 80-MW Bangui Phase 4 wind project of NorthWind Power Development Corp., the 200-MW wind project of Envision Energy Philippines Corp. in Leyte; the 187.2-MW Bulacan 1 wind project of CleanTech; the 200-MW Valencia wind project of Stark Wind Energy Corp. in Bohol; the 40-MW Dingle battery energy storage system of SMGP BESS Power Inc. in Dingle, Iloilo; and the 11.3-MW Tumauini (upper cascade) hydro project of Philnew Hydro Power Corp. in Isabela.

The DOE put in place several policies to entice investors to participate in the country’s power generation industry.

These include renewable energy policies such as auctions, net metering schemes, tax incentives and an aggressive clean energy target of 35 percent renewable energy in the power mix by 2030.

“As the only emerging market in the Asia-Pacific region with all these mechanisms in place, we are paving the way for a more sustainable energy future, not only for our nation but as a model for the region,” the DOE said.
