The Department of Energy (DOE) approved the Tanay wind power project’s expansion to 128 megawatts from 112 MW.
Alternergy Tanay Wind Corp. (ATWC), a unit of renewable power pioneer Alternergy Holdings Corp., said the project also increased the project cost to P11.5 billion from P10.4 billion.
“We are pleased to receive the DOE’s approval to increase the registered capacity of our Tanay Wind Power Project. We conducted a technical optimization study which showed that the potential net energy within the production area could generate as much as 128 MW of capacity,” said Knud Hedeager, president of Alternergy Wind Holdings Corp. (AWHC), the sub-holding company of Alternergy’s wind assets which owns 100 percent of ATWC.
Altenergy said that with the DOE’s approval, ATWC would install 16 wind turbine generators (WTG) with a rated capacity of 8 MW each, touted to be the largest onshore wind tower to be installed in the country.
The construction of project in Tanay, Rizal secured project financing of up to P8 billion from the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and Security Bank.
It will be Alternergy’s second wind project in Rizal province, after the 54-MW Pililla Rizal Wind farm which has been operating since 2015.
ATWC started project construction in June 2024, with target commercial operations by end-2025.
ATWC is also seeking the Energy Regulatory Commission’s approval of its application to develop and own or operate dedicated point-to-point limited transmission facilities costing P2.2 billion to connect the Tanay wind project to the Luzon grid.
The interim connection involves a bus-in along National Grid Corp. of the Philippines’ 500 kV San Jose/Balsik-Tayabas transmission line.
