BuhaWind Energy Philippines, a joint venture between Copenhagen Energy of Denmark and PetroGreen Energy Corp., is validating its project’s 2,000 megawatt estimated wind resource with its “extensive onsite confirmatory studies.”

Copenhagen Energy said the measurement campaign, designed with the help of DNV, a leading technical authority in wind generation, deploys two met masts and pair of dual scanning Viasala (light detection and ranging) LIDARs.

“The campaign incorporates access to three years of historic quality data, providing even deeper understanding of the wind resource potential. This ensures that we are well-positioned to bid in the GEA-5 auction,” the company said.

BuhaWind Energy earlier announced plans to install wind turbine generators of about 15 MW to 20 MW capacity each for the 2,000-MW North Luzon offshore wind power project, eyed to be operational by 2028 to 2030.

The project is among the most advanced offshore wind developments in the Philippines to date and will contribute to substantial direct and indirect jobs in the region, estimated at 24,000 over a two-year construction phase and thirty-year operational period.

The project will involve the erection of wind turbines in the waters off Burgos, Bangui and Pagudpud towns. It is one of the largest and earliest offshore wind service contracts granted by the Department of Energy in 2021.

PGEC and CE previously announced the joint development of offshore wind projects with a total combined capacity of 4,000 MW including the North Luzon project. These include Northern Mindoro (1,000 MW), and East Panay (500 MW to 1,000 MW).

PGEC is the renewable energy unit of Yuchengco-owned PetroEnergy Resources Corp. while CE is a Danish energy trader and developer of solar, onshore wind and offshore wind projects.

Incorporated in 2020, CE’s offshore wind pipeline has grown to over 28,000 MW, with projects across Denmark, Australia, Ireland, Italy, and the Philippines.

Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla earlier said offshore wind would be a significant pillar in the country’s transition to clean energy fuel and provide a climate-friendly power source to replace conventional and aging power plants.
