Alsons seeks to provide power

ALSONS Power Group said on Thursday it had submitted to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) a proposal to supply reserves or ancillary services to stabilize the power grid in Region 12 (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani provinces and Gen. Santos City, or Soccsksargen).

In a statement, Alsons Power said that by providing “ancillary services, power generators help ensure the stability of portions of the power grid by reserving and allocating generating capacity that can be dispatched immediately by NGCP, in case there are systems imbalances due to tripping of some generating units in the grid or lack of capacity in a particular area of the grid.”

If Alsons Power wins the proposed ancillary services procurement agreement (ASPA), it will provide NGCP up to 55 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the diesel power plant of Southern Philippines Power Corp. (SPPC) in Sarangani’s Alabel town.

This came after NGCP and the Western Mindanao Power Corp. (WMPC) inked an ASPA to supply the country’s grid operator with 100 MW of power from Alson Powers’ diesel plant in Zamboanga City.

This deal involves dispatchable generating capacity, reactive power support, and black start capability in order to stabilize the power grid in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is yet to approve both agreements.

Alsons Power is a Mindanao-based independent power producer which operates four power plants in the region.

The company also runs the 103-MW Mapalad Power Corp. diesel plant in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte province, and the first 105-MW section of the 210 MW Sarangani Energy Corp. (SEC) baseload coal-fired power plant in Sarangani’s Maasim town.
