Alsons Energy Development Corporation (AEDC), the Alsons Power group’s project development arm, recently signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Subanen Indigenous Community of Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte. The MOA will cover the Subanen Community’s share of royalties and other benefits to the community from the prospective operations of a 22 mega-watt (MW) hydroelectric power project currently being developed by AEDC within the vicinity of the Subanen people’s home territory. The prospective hydro project will be owned and operated by AEDC affiliate Siayan Sindangan Zambo-River Power Corporation (SZPC). The MOA exemplifies the emerging partnership between Alsons Power and the Subanen People whose quality of life will be greatly improved by the SZPC hydro power project.
The MOA was signed by: AEDC Deputy CEO Antonio Miguel B. Alcantara (seated: fifth from the right); Subanen Tribal Chieftain Timuay Johnny C. Anugon, Sr (seated: third from the left) and; Subanen Tribal Elder Timuay Jovino E. Gantiao, Sr. (seated: second from the left). Among those who signed as witnesses for the agreement were: National Commission on Indigenous Peoples Region 9 Director Ferdausi Cerna, (seated: fourth from the left) and SZPC Project Manager Engr. Francis Ruther Icao (seated: fourth from the right).
Alsons Power- Mindanao’s first private sector power generator plans to develop at least seven more run of river hydro power facilities in different parts of Mindanao and the Visayas. The group currently operates four power facilities in Mindanao with a total generating capacity of 468 MW serving over eight million people in 14 cities and 11 provinces in the country’s second largest island.
