Alternergy Holdings Corp. subsidiary Alabat Wind Power Corp. (AWPC) on Thursday held a groundbreaking ceremony to start the construction of the P7-billion Alabat wind power project in Alabat, Quezon.

The project will have a gross capacity of 64 megawatts with a target completion by November 2025 in compliance with its award under the Green Energy Auction 2 (GEA2) of the Department of Energy.

“We are starting the construction of the Alabat Wind Power Project. We are grateful for the support of the local government of Quezon and our host municipalities Alabat and Quezon. This wind farm is unique because it is the first wind farm to be installed facing the Pacific. It is also the first wind farm with the largest rated capacity at 8MW and the 1st wind farm in the Province of Quezon,” AWPC chairman Vince Perez said.

A short ceremony was held in Barangay Villa Norte, Alabat, one of AWPC’s host barangays. It was attended by Quezon Governor Helen Tan, Rep. Mike Tan, Alabat Mayor Ramil Arquiza, Quezon Mayor Juan Escolano, Department of Environment and Natural Resources regional executive director for CALABARZON Nilo Tamoria, representatives of the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Public Works and Highways and host barangay chairpersons and various stakeholders.

“This is a significant milestone for Alternergy. We are building up to 204MW capacity this year, starting with the Alabat Wind Power Project. Alternergy is marching onwards to our growth path and more importantly we will contribute new and renewable capacity to help boost supply reliability of the country,” AWPC president Gerry Magbanua said.

Alternergy earlier signed an interconnection agreement (ICA) with National Grid Corp. of the Philippines for Alabat wind power project to allow the project to connect to the Luzon grid.

Power output from the project will be coursed through NGCP’s 69 kV Hondagua transmission line in Lopez, Quezon.

The company awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract to China Energy Engineering Group Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute Co. Ltd. (GEDI) and its Philippine subsidiary GEDI Construction Development Corp. (GCDC) for the project.
