Clean energy advocates asked consumers to be vigilant and monitor the competitive selection process of retailer Manila Electric Co. in securing 1,200 megawatts of supply over the next 20 years.

Meralco recently issued the notice to bid on 1,200 MW of power requirement and set the bidding on Feb. 17.

“We welcome the changes that Meralco made in their terms of reference for this second bidding after the Department of Energy’ prod, but we have not forgotten how intent Meralco is on making sure their customers are burdened by costly and dirty electricity from coal,” said Gerry Arances, convenor of the Power for People Coalition.

The February bidding for the 1,200-MW supply is the second round of CSP for Meralco after the first bidding failed in September with only one bidder submitting an offer.
Meanwhile, Meralco’s successful CSP for its 1,200 MW 10-year and 500 MW five-year supply contracts are now pending approval with the Energy Regulatory Commission.
