Akelco: Firm offers Boracay biomass

An official from Aklan Electric Cooperative Inc. received a waste-to-energy project proposal which could help address the environmental problem in Boracay.

Akelco forwarded the proposal to the National Electrification Administration amid reports that a number of establishments in Boracay will be forced to temporarily shut down after repeated violations of environmental laws and regulations on proper waste disposal.

Akelco general manager Alexis Regalado said a company, which he did not disclose, expressed interest to build a biomass-fired power plant in one of the three barangays comprising Boracay Island.

“We have already been approached about plans to establish a biomass [plant to convert] wastes [into at least] one megawatt [of power]. They said they already acquired a lot in Manoc-Manoc, where they want to put it up, but [its development remains to be seen],” he said.

Regalado said the plant could be a possible long-term solution to mitigate the waste management problem in Boracay.
