Customers of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) may heave a sigh of relief as the power distributor announced lower electricity rates this month.

Customers of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) will get a sigh of relief as the power distributor announced lower electricity rates for January.

After two consecutive months of rate increases, the company said the overall rate would dip by P0.2189 per kilowatt hour (kWh) to P11.7428 from the previous month’s P11.9617 per kWh.

This means that a typical household consuming 200 kWh would see a reduction of P44 in their power bill this month.

The decrease was attributed to cheaper generation costs that fell by P0.1313 per kWh to P6.8358 per kWh.

The generation charge, which usually accounts for at least half of power bills, covers the cost of power purchased from independent power producers, the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market, and power supply agreements.

“While electricity rates decreased this month, we would like to remind our customers to continue practicing
energy efficiency as a way of life especially with the dry season is fast approaching,” Meralco vice president and head of Corporate Communications Joe Zaldarriaga said.
