First Balfour Inc. has won the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Lopez-led Energy Development Corp.’s (EDC) 23-megawatt Palayan Binary geothermal power plant project in Manito town, Albay province. In a statement, the EDC said the deal — which was first awarded last November 10, but only announced earlier this week — involved a balance-of-works package that covers the installation of the equipment necessary to generate energy using the residual brine flow from the existing EDC steam field. “It includes EPC works for the civil, structural, and electromechanical works to complete the binary power plant,” it added. The P1.3-billion project is expected to boost the Bicol region’s local economy as 70 percent of its targeted total manpower would come from Albay and Sorsogon provinces. Once it is finished next year, the plant will boost the overall power generation capacity of the existing Bacman Conventional Geothermal Power Plant, which currently generates 120 MW equivalent steam capacity.
