The Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines assured the public of sufficient power supply to meet the expected increase in demand in June as government slowly lifts restrictions to allow more businesses to operate.

IEMOP, however, warned that electricity prices may go up as demand increases on increased economic activity.

IEMOP chief operating officer Robinson Descanzo said that with the implementation of modified enhanced community quarantine on May 16 and the transition to general community quarantine by June, electricity demand would likely increase as commercial and industrial establishments reopen.

“Our assumption for June more or less, supply is more stable. One, because of the entry of more production from hydros, number two temperature is going down in June unlike during summer. We know that the generators have problems during high temperatures. But historically for June, temperature is lower and the entry of hydro helps,” Descanzo said.
