The Energy Department will come out with a circular on the adoption of energy storage system in the electric power industry in January, a government official said.

Energy Assistant Secretary Redentor Delola said the policy for ESS, classified as both power generator and load, would come out next month.

“The general policy is to recognize ESS and its corresponding applications and benefits to the electric power industry and encourage the use of ESS for the operational improvement of electric power industry,” Delola said.

An ESS is a facility which is connected to the grid, small grid, distribution system, and end-user facility.  It acts as a load or a generating facility and is designed to receive electrical energy, store energy and convert such energy into electricity and deliver such electricity for energy demand and requirement, or to convert such energy to provide improved reliability or economic benefits to the electric power industry.
