The Department of Energy approved the request of power retailer Manila Electric Co. to hold another bidding on the contract to supply 180 megawatts of baseload capacity.

“We have also gotten the approval of the DOE for the 180-MW baseload that is supposed to replace the higher price of fuel of First Gas plants,” Meralco first vice president and head of regulatory affairs Jose Ronald Valles said.

“If we are able to do the CSP [competitive selection process] and implement the PSA, the 180 MW will hopefully mitigate the prices of our PSAs or power generation costs for the summer months,” Valles said.

Valles said Meralco received the DOE’s reply on Feb. 22 on the proposed terms of reference for the 180-MW capacity. “After which, Meralco is enjoined to proceed with the publication of invitation to bid with TOR table in the bid requirements. The TOR and schedule of CSP activities are being finalized,” Valles said.

Meralco filed the application in December for baseload requirement from Feb. 26, 2022 until July 25, 2022.
