Natural gas production in the Philippines has reached 107,902 million standard cubic feet (MMcf), lower than the 155,495 MMcf posted last year, according to latest data from the Department of Energy (DoE). Total natural gas output hit 2,356,960 billion cubic feet (BCF), which includes production from the San Antonio gas field, as of November 18. Of the total number, the power sector used the majority of the country’s gas output at 2,228,307 BCF. The industrial sector followed at 40,478 MMcf and the transport industry at 184 MMcf. According to the department, data from 2000 to 2008 included natural gas output from the San Antonio gas field of the PNOC Exploration Corp. (PNOC EC), the exploration arm of the Philippine National Oil Co. This gas field was the first of its kind discovered in the country and was developed as a demonstration project to enhance the country’s experience on gas production. This field began production in 1994 and supplied the fuel requirements of a 3-megawatt (MW) power plant in Echague, Isabela. The gas field produced 3.54 billion cubic feet of gas until its decommissioning in 2008.
