ERC sets higher capacity limits

THE Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has prescribed higher installed generating capacity and market share of generation companies for this year to foster competition and protect consumers’ welfare. In a resolution, the agency said the installed generating capacity limit nationwide is increased to 5,852.41 megawatts (MW) from 5,450.78 MW in 2019, representing 25 percent of the installed generating capacity of 23,409.65 MW. The limit for Luzon is at 4,813.2 MW from 4,605.2 MW; for Visayas, 1,009.967 MW from 909.43 MW; and Mindanao, 1,199.73 MW from 1,026.25 MW. The installed generating capacity and market share limitations will be enforced until the next adjustment on or before March 15, 2021. The ERC issued the resolution pursuant to Section 45 (a) of Republic Act 9136, or the “Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001” and Section 4 (a), Rule 11 of the law’s implementing rules and regulations.
